The Siamese Fighting Fish or betta is a popular aquarium fish originating from and native to Southeast Asia and is called “pla-kad” in Thai, or fighting fish. It is a beautiful fish which can range greatly in coloration and fin shape. The species in general prefers warm water with a significant amount of vegetation and temperatures of 26-30 degrees Celsius. Bettas need to have access to the water’s surface to allow easy breathing. Males are typically characteristically territorial and aggressive and should not be kept together in close quarters.
